Five Basic Makeup Necessities for a Natural Look

For some people, makeup incites feelings of anxiety for lack of knowledge about how to apply it. For others, makeup is like having an adult toy chest full of fun and colorful ways to change your look. Most of us are somewhere in the middle. We like the idea of makeup, but want to avoid looking like a four year old applied our eye shadow. Below are the five makeup necessities that can help you to look appropriately natural.

1. Primer

Think of your face like underwear. No one is supposed to see it, yet the correct kind can create an illusion of a sleek and firm silhouette. Primer prevents makeup from sliding off your face. It is the glue that holds your look in place. Don’t skip this step.

2. Foundation

After you let your primer dry completely, it is time to select the correct foundation. If you have oily skin, a powder foundation in a color that matches your skin tone will work best. If your face is dry, try a liquid foundation. Apply this all over your face. It will help to even out uneven coloring, and make your pores look non-existent.

3. Blush

A subtle color on your face is important to your overall look. Make sure that you are selecting a shade that compliments your skin tone, otherwise you might as well invest in some really big, oversized shoes because you will look like a clown. Apply just enough on the apples of your cheeks so that it looks similar to what you would look like after a moderate run.

4. Mascara

This is an important step to make the eyes pop. Make sure to use an eyelash curler so that your lashes have a bit of bend to them. Apply a dark brown or black shade all over the top lashes, and a bit on the bottom.

5. Lips

To finish off your look, choose a neutral lipstick or gloss. If you feel like adding a pop of color, go bold with a red. This can really make your whole face come alive.

Once you become well versed in these five things, you can play around with other types of makeup to enhance eyes, lips, and cheekbones. Makeup should be used to enhance your natural beauty, so until you know your way around the beauty isle, stick to neutrals and muted colors.
