Multi-Cultural Special Occasion Summer Trends

Almost as highly anticipated as how the former Meghan Markle, now Duchess of Sussex, would appear on her wedding day to Prince Harry, people also wondered how her mom, Doria Ragland would look. The 61 year old African American is both a social worker and yoga instructor in hip, very independent-minded Los Angeles, California. This is a city that combines the fitness and youth culture of Hollywood with the “You do you!” tradition of the Golden State. It was fascinating — and inspiring — to people of all cultures, races and ages, that she didn’t do a “makeover” before her debut in front of reportedly 2 billion people worldwide.

As for her makeup, Ms. Ragland seems to favor the same approach as her daughter. She goes for well defined-dark lined eyes, with light lashings of mascara. No false lashes were visible. Shadow was in a single skin tone, just on the lid — no deepened crease, no highlighted brow bone. Her brows seemed to have been well-shaped and subtly darkened: her brows are a clear black, opposed to the softened salt-and-pepper of her natural hair color. Also in her daughter’s style is a browned peach blush, but without Meghan’s more obvious contouring and strobing. Meghan favors a light, sugary baby pink lip color, which Ms. Ragland also used on the day of the wedding. Though Meghan has appeared on television for many years and has had countless makeup artists working on her, it’s interesting that she keeps what is quickly becoming a dated “fleshy” look to her lips. After all, even Kim Kardashian has moved on to deeper nudes. One can even imagine Ms. Ragland might look stunning with an opaque rosewood lipstick, the better to create a more even, defined color to her mouth.

Also amazing to viewers: Ms. Ragland has a small nose piercing! She did not take it out for the wedding.
