What to Do When His and Hers, Becomes Ours

What to Do When His and Hers, Becomes Ours

All newlyweds face the inevitable joining of home furnishings. Making the transition to merging styles (and your husband’s four-hundred issue comic book collection), might not be as blissful as you imagined. These few simple helpful hints may ease the stress and decor arguments that may arise.

Compromise is Key

Don’t look at that old beat-up coffee table he has so many great Super Bowl memories with, and demand he throws it out. Instead look into repurposing it to give it a much-needed facelift. There are plenty of DIY’s available online. Most important though is to get your partner involved in the process so you can bond. You can look at your renewed furniture piece knowing there is a little bit of both of you in that coffee table now.

Don’t Be Scared of the Trash Can

While we are on the subject of saving things we love, we might as well discuss what we need to trash. For many people’ this is the hardest part to except about cohabitating.  Unfortunately, this is a part of life that we all must face in order to function as healthy individuals; and this occasion is no exception. Rule of thumb in this instance, “If it has no sentimental value, and takes you longer than 30 seconds to decide whether to toss or throw, toss it.” That long pause means you’re not even sure if you are going to use the item. Use your best judgment, but don’t go trash happy.

Shop Till You Drop

Finally, you are inevitably probably going to need a few key pieces or accessories. Take your spouse on a much-needed shopping trip to finding the perfect sofa, ottoman, armoire, etc., that fits both your styles. This is also a great opportunity to look for art you both agree on. Let’s face it, bare walls just seem like your in a hotel, not a home.

These few integral tips hopefully make your nest building a little more stress-free, and give you a lot more drive to make the home of your dreams a reality.
