Living Styles: 3 Tips For Surviving A Second Job

So, you finally buckled down and got a second job. Or, perhaps, you’ve crunched the numbers and realized you need a second job in order to make your ends meet. Maybe you’re looking for a weekend side hustle, or an equal partner to your primary job, but if you want to keep it without losing your mind, then you have to make sure you’re really ready for it. Not just the trial period, where a second job can be new and exciting, but once that wears off. When you find yourself pushing the wheel, grinding your gears, and wondering if this balancing act is really worth it.

Once you hit that point, here are some survival tips from Cheat Sheet, and Money Under 30 that can help you keep moving forward.

Tip #1: Variety

Variety is the spice of life, and it can stop you from having a meltdown at work. If you’re going to be on the clock all the time, it’s important to make sure you aren’t doing the same thing all the time. If you sit behind a desk at your first job, maybe try something active with the second. If the first is all facts and figures, do something creative with the second. It might not sound like a big deal, but work is a lot like weightlifting; if you use the same muscles all the time, you’re going to sprain something.

Tip #2: Keep Your Goals Front and Center

No one works two jobs for the happy fun times; you’ve got a reason. Maybe that reason is because you want to save up money to get a new car, or you want to repair a hole in your finances from a medical emergency. It might even be student loans, knocking on your door and expecting to be paid. Whatever it is that’s making you burn your candle at both ends, though, remember why you’re there, and don’t be afraid to stop once you’ve met your goals. More importantly, don’t make 50+ hour weeks a habit. Brighter stars burn out faster, and working too much might not be worth the cost if you do it for too long.

Tip #3: Take Time For Yourself

All work and no play never works out well for Jack. If you’re working two jobs (or more), then you really need to take time for yourself. Not just physically, but mentally and emotionally, too. If you stress and strain yourself too hard, then something is going to give. Even if you just have a Saturday afternoon lunch with a friend, or go for a walk when you get off work, sometimes that can be enough. Whatever works for you, make sure you decompress before you blow a gasket.
